Frequently asked questions

How do I check a VIN for free?

Type the 17-character VIN into the decoder on cleanvins.com/check and press Check. CleanVins queries the NHTSA vPIC build record and the NHTSA recall database and returns year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, drivetrain, plant of assembly and open recall campaigns — free, with no signup and no credit card.

Where do I find the VIN on a car?

The VIN is visible through the bottom-left corner of the windshield, on the driver-side door jamb sticker, and printed on the title, registration and insurance card. It is always 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O or Q.

What does the free VIN check not show?

The free decode does not include title brands, salvage or total-loss records, odometer history, ownership count or auction records. Those come from NMVTIS-licensed data and are included in the CleanVins full vehicle history report for $9.99 per VIN.
