Seventeen. Every car, truck and motorcycle built for the US market since 1981 has a 17-character VIN. The letters I, O and Q are never used, to avoid confusion with digits.

Through the lower-left corner of the windshield, on the driver-side door jamb sticker, on the insurance card, and on the title and registration documents.
